Mayan Culture

San Pedro la Laguna is a Tz’utujil Mayan community. It is one of the few places in the world that observes the traditional Mayan calendars. Daily life is lived within the framework of traditions, customs, rituals and ceremonial cycles.

All of the Spanish instructors and home-stay hosts at Mayab Spanish School are local Mayans. The school has a resident professor of Mayan history, ancient Mayan books and documents and a place for ceremonies and Mayan rituals. There is no better place in the world to learn about Mayan culture and spiritually.

A great deal of information about Mayan culture and spirituality is offered as part of daily life at the school and within the village, at low or no additional charge to our students.

We also offer one on one instruction with Professor Francisco Puac. Professor Puac has over 50 years experience studying and teaching about the Mayan culture. He has lectured across Guatemala and internationally. You can learn the Tz’utujil Mayan Language, Mayan Cosmovision and Mayan Culture. Contact us for a custom quote if you are interested in this opportunity to study with a distinguished expert.
