Community Projects

MAYAB IX is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the living conditions of the poorest populations of western Guatemala. These areas have little access to education and medical care due to bad roads and extreme poverty. We work in the areas of health care, education and ecology.

Profits from Mayab Spanish School are invested into MAYAB IX. We also encourage our students to volunteer with our community projects. This allows for deep immersion in the local language and culture.

We carry medications, nurses and physicians to remote villages in an effort to improve general health care and decrease the high maternal and infant mortality rates in the region. Please let us know if you have a medical background or if you would be willing to donate medications to this project.

We also give free classes at our school for local children and teenagers to learn more about their Mayan culture and spirituality, in an effort to preserve the local wisdom in the next generation. Volunteers can help organize and execute these educational sessions.

Our ecology projects focus on reforestation of crop land and sustainable agricultural practices. if you have a background in conservation and ecology, or if you would just like to contribute labor, please let us know.

If you would like to donate to our projects, please send us a message or talk to us when you arrive. You can make a general donation or donate money towards a specific project.
